Listen to the Music at Boys & Girls Clubs

This summer, the Orange Blossom Blues Society (OBBS) has been making beautiful music at Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Seminole County, with the help of the kids.

Musicians and volunteers with OBBS conducted mini workshops at the Oviedo, East Altamonte, and West Sanford branches, giving students introductory lessons on songwriting and playing keyboards and harmonicas. Each workshop culminated in a lively finale, with the children demonstrating their newly learned skills. The harmonicas were an especially big hit, judging by the sounds that filled the air during each session.

The workshops – which are part of the Society’s Blues in the Schools (BITS) initiative – included healthy snacks, notebooks, pens, and harmonicas for the kids to keep. Funding was provided by a grant from the nonprofit Seminole Cultural Arts Council, OBBS, and in-kind donations. The Orange Blossom Blues Society had previously donated a keyboard and bench to all three Boys & Girls Clubs in Seminole County.

OBBS is a nonprofit organization made up of blues enthusiasts who work to keep the genre strong in Central Florida.

“The children of Seminole County need music and the arts,” says Cathy Bowers, president of OBBS, “and our mission is to help foster the younger generation.” To learn more, visit OBBS.org.
